An interview with acclaimed Dutch book designer Irma Boom on her most recent work, a live appearance by Boom at an event co-presented by AIGA/NY and Designers & Books, and a visual tour of the history of cover design at the 60-year old literary journal The Paris Review were highlights of this past week. Next week we look forward to a unique in-studio and online book signing with graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister—which will also feature a student-led interview and some free temporary tattoos of Sagmeister “maxims,” courtesy of Tattly. The books that inspire Dutch product designer Aldo Bakker and a list of books on the theme of “Play” in collaboration with CreativeMornings were among this week’s highlights. Next week: a book list from former Domus and Abitare editor Marco Romanelli and a celebration of 60 years of cover art at the The Paris Review. Designers & Books is also partnering with AIGA/NY to present two special public events coming up in January and February: an in-studio and live online book signing with graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister, and a conversation between book designer Irma Boom and Design Matters host Debbie Millman. This week we were especially pleased to publish our in-depth interview with architect, urban, planner, author, and educator Denise Scott Brown, who talked about 45 years of “learning from Las Vegas” as well as a range of other topics. This week we featured book recommendations from IDEO’s Tom and David Kelley; some larger than life-size visuals from Steven Heller and Mirko Ilić’s new book, Lettering Large; and an interactive novel. In anticipation of our interview with architect, urban planner, educator, and author Denise Scott Brown this coming January, we posted some reflections from students who were enrolled in Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown’s famous 1968 studio class at the Yale School of Architecture, “Learning from Las Vegas.” Next week we’ll find out who the winners are for our giveway of signed copies of the book Learning from Las Vegas (drawing ends Dec. 21 at 12:01 EST).
