Erik Spiekermann’s Book List 11 books and 4 comments

This list was in my head, and I was thinking that getting the details and writing a few lines for each title would take a leisurely Sunday afternoon. It turned out to be a busy Friday morning instead. I’ve made this list from all the books I could reach from my desk at home without getting onto ladders. I have about 3,000 books, so there could easily be many more. As there is intelligent life outside the U. S., I have included some of my favorite books in German as well.

Get Adrian Frutiger—Typefaces: The Complete Works and you can forget the rest of other Frutiger's book. Yes, Ausgewählte Aufsätze über Fragen der Gestalt des Buches und der Typographie is available in English version. http://www.thinkingform.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/theformofthebook.jpg. One of the most beautiful books !!! Love the cover.

Too bad Bosshard 's book is in German and his son works are phenomenal as well.

Ahhhh; Frutiger, Tschichold, and Gill books always get special treatment on my bookshelves...

I couldn't agree with you more regarding Bob Gill's "use of plain language and common sense..." which he discusses in his book, Graphic Design as a Second Language ISBN: 1 9207 44 39 8—it's one of my favorite Gill books!

I'll definitely check out the other books. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Aswin:

This is a note to thank you for bringing to our attention the fact that there is an English translation of  Ausgewählte Aufsätze über Fragen der Gestalt des Buches und der Typographie—which goes by The Form of the Book: Essays on the Morality of Good Design. You of course know this, but for others we will note here that the translator is Hajo Hadeler and that the publisher is Hartley & Marks. The translation was published in 1997.

We will also note for others that your blog, thinkingform.com (a blog focused on inspirational forms of typography, books, art, architecture, design, grid systems, illustration and photography), is worth a visit.

English translation of Bosshards books. Now there's a pet project for a publisher somewhere...
