Book List of the Week: Six American Fashion Designers and the Books That Inspire Them

July 7, 2014

America’s birthday celebration has just passed and this week we celebrate six major names in American fashion design—Stephen Burrows, Reed Krakoff, Isaac Mizrahi, Cynthia Rowley, Ralph Rucci, and Anna Sui—and the books that inspire them.

Stephen Burrows's Book List

As you can see, I prefer books with images and visuals, whether it be through an author’s descriptive words, or a photographer’s camera lens. I also love a good story. The only time I get to read full novels is on vacation . . . and I don’t get very many of those!

Reed Krakoff's Book List These are books I find interesting at the moment. They span a cross section of different periods, movements, ideas, and styles, yet still connect to one another.
Isaac Mizrahi's Book List

Richard Avedon, Tibor Kalman, William Makepeace Thackeray. As a general category, books are probably the most inspiring objects in my life—whether it’s literature or picture books or cookbooks or self-help. Some of my favorite tables are made of stacks of books!

Cynthia Rowley's Book List

Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, Calvin Tomkins.

Ralph Rucci's Book List

Diana Vreeland, Truman Capote, William Shakespeare.

Anna Sui's Book List

I find it so important to maintain the spark of curiosity, the romance of adventure, the discovery of unknown worlds, the charm of an unexpected surprise, learning about something new. Films, exhibitions, music, travel, and flea markets—all help do that for me. And books!
