Le Corbusier: Oeuvre Complète (Complete Works)
The complete works of Le Corbusier (1887–1965) in eight volumes. Published between 1929 and 1970, and reprinted in numerous editions ever since, it is a comprehensive record of the buildings, projects, sketchbooks, manifestos, drawings, and texts of arguably the 20th century’s most influential architect.
Le Corbusier was an extraordinary artist with a great a talent for transforming his Ars Poetica into a doctrine and a movement. I never prayed in his church, but I greatly admired his genius.
That it only takes eight volumes to contain the entire architectural oeuvre of this gargantuan figure is the real surprise. Owning the complete set seemed entirely out of reach when I first was introduced to the set in architecture school. I bought a single volume (52–57) for $17 in college, and eventually owned the entire set. It is so packed with intelligence (a friend called it “the idea book”) that I will never fully exhaust it as a reference.
I borrowed this set of books from my father, Wim Crouwel, and read them thoroughly. Everything has already been invented by this genius architect.
I always return to this set of volumes with a mixture of humility and admiration. The work is still fresh and always inspiring.
