Julien Gracq

Fiction

Set in a fictional port city, this story follows a young aristocrat sent to observe the activities of a naval base located across the bay from an enemy fort. These two cities have been engaged in a 300-year battle, yet much of the battle revolves around waiting, with neither side willing to take action nor to accept peace. Gracq's themes of transgressions and boundaries resonate with all countries and all times.

Along with Michel Tournier, Gracq is an author who creates a world in which I always feel at home.
