Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, gave himself his famous pen name in 1863, when he was only 28 years old. But he didn't stop at designing a new identity, he also designed his own notebooks. One of 12 custom-made, leather notebooks used from 1881 to 1882 (shown here) reveals Twain's preference for tabbed pages so he could easily find the next blank space.
