Rocco Yim was born and educated in Hong Kong. After graduating from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) he joined the firm of Spence Robinson for two years before starting his own practice in 1979, which eventually evolved into a partnership with Patrick P. W. Lee and Bernard M. B. Hui in 1982.

Since winning a First Prize in the L’Opéra de la Bastille international design competition in 1983, his works consistently have received awards both in Hong Kong and abroad. Recent accolades include the ARCASIA Gold Medals in 1994 and 2003, Chicago Athenaeum Architectural Awards in 2006, 2011, and 2013, Kenneth F. Brown Award in 2007, and World Architecture Festival category winner in 2010.

Yim is a regularly invited speaker for local and international symposia. His works have been published in various regional and global journals, and have been exhibited four times in the Venice Biennale over the last decade.

He is currently an Honorary Professor at HKU, Department of Architecture; Adjunct Professor at HKU SPACE; a Museum Adviser to the LCSD; and a member of the IAF Council of International Advisors for the University of Southern California. He received the degree of Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences from the University of Hong Kong in 2013.

Rocco Yim’s work has been featured in the books The City in Architecture (2003), Being Chinese in Architecture (2004), and Presence 2012. A new monograph on his work, Reconnecting Cultures, was released in May 2013.
