so many classics! i'm partial to classic reading...surprised that The Stranger wasn't there by Camus. My dilemma is finding something modern and contemporary to read that's decent, and worth the time it takes to seek it out among titles at the bookstore...i've learned I can't always trust my own judgment in selecting a newer book off the shelves. My next novel is one of the following three: Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, The Fountainhead by Ann Rand (although I've heard its something of a politically one-sided read, where those needing help from society are left to suffer alone...), or The Portrait of the artist as a Young Man (which I've borrowed from a friend and read 2-3 pages of and was not really too interested to turn the fourth page...).
Oh well. I guess happy hunting then for me...what are you reading now?

Thanks for posting your comment. I am not sure if Eric will have the chance to reply to you or not. But we did want to let you know that we empathize with the problem you describe. And our guess is that many people share your desire to find new, contemporary fiction to read—but aren't quite sure where to turn for recommendations.
I have two suggestions.
At some point in the not too distant future, we are going to be asking the designers on the site to also tell us the books they are currently reading. This will be in contrast to the lists currently posted, which are intended to be more focused on formative books that they may have read earlier in their careers. Our hope is that this new feature (tentatively called "Who's Reading What Now") will be up and running some time this summer. We hope it will help address the situation you describe.
However, for a more immediate solution, you might—by phone if not in person—contact one of our affiliated booksellers listed on the site. There are a number that have a broad range of inventory beyond design titles. For example, you might try any of these: Tattered Cover, Books & Books, Barbara's, McNally Jackson, or Joseph Fox. Give them a call; tell them you were referred by "Designers & Books"; tell them how you are hoping to be helped; see what they say.
